The goal of this training is to help victim advocates and other professionals who work with victims of crime build the skills necessary to recognize, intervene, and prevent stress, burnout, vicarious trauma, and compassion fatigue. Participants will learn information and skills related to:
  • Sources and impact of stress and trauma.
  • Indicators of compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma.
  • Healthy coping.
  • Developing resilience.
  • Personal and agency care plans to minimize the risk of compassion fatigue.

The training is designed for those who work in the field of victim services, as well as those in other fields who work with victims of violent crime. The training includes interactive exploration of self-care techniques, strategies for recognizing symptoms of compassion fatigue, and strategies managers can use to ensure balance and self-care for those they supervise.

This training is designed primarily for victim advocates who are volunteers or staff at victim services facilities. However, the broad range of information regarding compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma may also make the training useful for professional counselors, law enforcement officers, prosecutors, and medical staff.

Module 1: Introduction and Training Overview

By the end of this module, participants will be able to:

  • Identify one personal goal participants have for taking this training.
  • Identify one important reason that keeps them in the victim services field.

Module 2: Sources and Impact of Stress and Trauma

By the end of this module, participants will be able to:

  • Distinguish between stress and burnout.
  • Identify stressors associated with working as a victim service provider.
  • Describe professional successes and challenges in their careers.

Module 3: Indicators of Compassion Fatigue

By the end of this module, participants will be able to:

  • Define the terms compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma.
  • Recognize symptoms of compassion fatigue.
  • Identify actions and behaviors that violate healthy boundaries.
  • Measure their personal level of compassion fatigue, using the Palette of Grief.

Module 4: Healthy Coping Strategies

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Identify adaptive coping strategies that contribute to health and well-being.
  • Develop a plan to incorporate positive coping strategies into your life to make lifestyle changes.
  • Identify steps supervisors can take to minimize the risk of compassion fatigue.

Module 5: Developing Resilience

By the end of this module, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the five core elements of resilience.
  • Develop personal strategies to strengthen their resilience.

Module 6: Developing Personal and Agency Care Plans

By the end of this module, participants will be able to:

  • Develop personal and agency care plans.
  • Express appreciation for another participant.

Module 7: Wrap-up and Closing

By the end of this module, participants will be able to:

  • Identify final questions about the training materials.
  • Express their thoughts about the training experience.
