This course is designed for victim service providers and allied professionals who develop and deliver training but do not have a formal background or extensive experience in adult education or instructional design. This interactive training helps participants build the knowledge and practical skills they need to plan, develop, implement, and evaluate quality-training programs. During the training, participants will apply new concepts and skills by developing a lesson plan for a training for their agency. In this training, participants will:
- Learn the basic principles of adult learning.
- Explore a range of training techniques and activities that meet the needs of those with different learning styles.
- Prepare a lesson plan for a one-day training course that includes goals, objectives, a content outline, and an outline of activities.
- Hone presentation skills by learning how to organize lectures and apply five principles of effective communication.
- Examine ways to facilitate training, create a positive learning environment, and ensure productive group activities
Module 1: Introductions and Overview
By the end of this module, participants will be able to
- Recall names and simple facts about their fellow participants and the trainer(s)
- Identify the knowledge and skills that they will build during the training
Module 2: How Adults Learn
By the end of this module, participants will be able to:
- Recognize ways in which traditional classroom approaches differ from approaches that support adult learning.
- Identify five principles of adult learning.
- Describe auditory, visual, and kinesthetic learning styles.
- Recommend at least three training techniques that best appeal to those with each learning style.
Module 3: Assessing Training Needs
By the end of this module, participants will be able to:
- Identify the benefits of training needs assessment.
- Ask the appropriate questions to determine if training is the best solution to a problem/issue.
- Use a Gap Assessment table to help them determine the learning needs of training participants.
- Develop a needs assessment plan for a training program of their choice.
Module 4: Lesson Plan Design and Development
By the end of this module, participants will be able to prepare a lesson plan for a t raining course (maximum length: one day) with the following included:
- At least one goal
- At least one objective that is concise, clear, action-oriented, and measurable
- An outline of the information to be included in the training
- An outline of activities that will be used to process the information.
Module 5: Presenting Like a Pro
By the end of this module, participants will be able to:
- Demonstrate an assigned communication weakness.
- Prepare a three- to five-minute presentation that includes an opening, body, and closing.
- Conduct a three- to five-minute presentation that illustrates the five core components of effective communication.
Module 6: Facilitating Training
By the end of this module, participants will be able to:
- Describe ways in which trainers can prepare a training environment that supports the learning process.
- Recommend three strategies for dealing with challenging participants.
- Explain at least two key points of facilitating group activities.
- Write complete facilitation notes for at least one activity in their lesson plans.
Module 7: Evaluating Training
By the end of this module, participants will be able to:
- State the four levels of training evaluation.
- Devise an evaluation strategy, to include Level One and Level Two evaluation, for their lesson plans.
Module 8: Wrap-Up and Evaluation
By the end of this module, participants will be able to:
- Design a personalized checklist to assist them with their future training efforts.
