This workshop provides an overview of the definitions and symptoms of Compassion Fatigue, Burnout, Vicarious Trauma, and Secondary Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and will include an interactive exploration of self-care techniques, strategies for recognizing symptoms of compassion fatigue, and strategies supervisors can use to ensure balance and self care for those they supervise. Topics include:
- Understanding the prevalence and symptoms of Compassion Fatigue and Vicarious Trauma.
- The impact of traumatic stress and fear on victim service professionals.
- How to develop healthy coping strategies and build resiliency.
- How to develop an agency self care plan and a personal self care plan.
- Ways supervisors can ensure a healthy environment for staff, as well as recognize the signs of Compassion Fatigue in those they supervise.
Module 1: Introductions and Overview
By the end of this module, participants will be able to:
- Describe simple facts about your fellow participants and the trainer(s).
- Identify the knowledge and skills that you will build during the training.
- Identify class expectations.
Module 2: Sources of Stress and Trauma
By the end of this module, participants will be able to:
- Identify stressors associated with working with victims of crime.
- Identify stressors associated with working in the criminal justice system.
- Describe professional and personal sources of stress and trauma.
Module 3: Impact of Stress and Trauma
By the end of this module, participants will be able to:
- Identify the difference between eustress and distress.
- Identify the fight or flight response.
- Recognize and understand the symptoms of burnout.
Module 4: Indicators of Compassion Fatigue
By the end of this module, participants will be able to:
- Understand the terms compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma.
- Recognize symptoms of compassion fatigue.
- Identify actions and behaviors that violate healthy boundaries.
- Identify personal Palette of Grief® to measure personal level of compassion fatigue.
Module 5: Healthy Coping Strategies
By the end of this module, participants will be able to:
- Identify adaptive coping with life stress.
- Identify steps for dealing with burnout.
- Identify steps Supervisors can take to minimize the risk of compassion fatigue.
- Identify coping skills and lifestyle changes that contribute to overall health and well-being
Module 6: Building Resilience
By the end of this module, participants will be able to:
- Identify characteristics of people who exhibit resiliency
- Describe ways to build resilience
- Measure personal resiliency
Module 7: Developing Professional and Personal Care Plans
By the end of this module, participants will be able to:
- Understand how to develop professional and personal care plans.
- Implement a professional care plan.
- Implement a personal care plan to minimize the risk of or to prevent compassion fatigue.
- Practice a relaxation exercise.
- Enjoy the importance of humor.
Module 8: Wrap-up and Evaluation
By the end of this module, participants will be able to:
- Design a personalized checklist on healthy coping and resilience to assist them during their advocacy work.
- Provide feedback about the training.
